Pre-conception Preparation
You can prepare your body for preconception, conception and pregnancy by improving your fertility foundation.
The four main areas of focus during preconception are:
Diet
Activity
Supplements
Stress Management
With your diet, more than ever, you need to eat for overall health and wellbeing but in your case you also want to eat in order for all your different organs and glands working at their optimum, to have hormonal balance and function for the complex process of getting pregnant.
Although you have no doubt heard it before it is crucial to have the proper daily allowance of fruits and vegetables and water. This is very basic, but it's crucial to pay attention to in order to help increase your fertility and your chances of getting pregnant more quickly.
With your activity, chose any activity that will keep you from being sedentary, preferably something you enjoy so that you do it regularly. It will help you feel better, lose weight if you need to, and will improve your fertility and chances of getting pregnant. You can choose gentle exercises such as stretching, yoga, swimming or walking, or more active exercise such as, biking, jogging or aerobics. You need to keep that healthy oxygenated blood circulating and nourishing your body.
With your supplementation, even if you're eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily, you will need to have quality multivitamins, multiminerals and pre natal supplement(s). These will need to include folic acid for you and your baby in the early stages.
With your stress levels, the first thing that needs to be said is STRESS IS A KILLER! Stress can kill your passion, your love life, your sexual desire and activity, your motivation, your wellbeing, your relationship and your fertility!
A Few Ways to Stress Less...
Of course trying to get pregnant can be very stressful especially if you have been trying to conceive for a while. The good news is, it is not as difficult as you might at first think. We all manage stress differently and it is very important to manage it well for you. There are plenty of ways to relax and just by having plenty of activity will certainly help with the relaxing of your mind too.
Taking in natural beauty and wonder with simple things such as a gentle stroll in the mountains, park or on the beach. Spending time with animals is another, animal therapy is rewarding with mutual unconditioned loving happening. If you don’t have one, then that is something to think about. Maybe someone else you know has a pet that could do with a bit of extra pampering?
Some simple deep breathing, practiced daily, will automatically balance both sides of your brain… really it’s true! So take a deeeeeep breath ...hold it for a count of 5 and exhale deeply with the sound coming out of your mouth - ARGHH. Repeat several times. You might think it funny but it is a great yogic technique that lets you whole mind and body groan out your built up stress.
Listening to music or to a guided meditation CD is another great way to relax.
Break negative thought pathways. Every time an unhelpful thought or feeling comes into your mind, rather than making that a self-fulfilling prophecy, simply shout out ‘STOP!’ (internally if you prefer) and you will start to change the neural pathway from the rut of negativity to the success of positivity.
It may seem difficult to include stress management techniques into your busy lifestyle at first, but you can believe that it will be worth it. After all, you are planning to embark on a major lifestyle change and you will need all the help that you can get as you navigate all of the changes that are about to follow.
